Author notes: Written for the New Years prompt.
With Yule came the new year, and the turning of the calendars—and a grand feast in Michel Delving. Sam sat between Rosie and Merry, watching the dancers spin around the middle of the open floor, and talking of plans for the coming year.
“It’s mayor-choosing this Midsummer,” Merry remarked, as out on the dance floor Pippin whirled by with a giggling Elanor. “Old Whitfoot’s already said he’s going to retire to the Southfarthing to raise turnips. What do you say, Sam?”
Sam nearly choked on his beer. “What, me, run for mayor?”
“Why not?”
“You’d the the Shire a lot of good,” Rosie said, as she handed Frodo-lad on her lap another dinner roll.
Wil Whitfoot was passing by, in fine form as always, but he stopped to lean on his cane and add with a grin, “Mayor Gamgee! That has a fine ring to it, don’t you think?”
