Summary: Like Smaug, Scatha, ice drake of the north, keeps track of his hoard.

Rating: PG
Warnings: references to war and politics
Word Count: 28 + 100

Title: The Wave Warbled Under
Characters: Erellont, Aerandir (two of Earendil's mariners); cross-over character: the Sea Singer.
Pairing: Aerandir/ Sea Singer (hinted at)
Text type / Format: fixed-length ficlet
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Rating: G
Warnings: reference to canon-typical deaths in Beleriand
Word Count: 333
Summary: Aerandir, a mariner who accompanied Earendil on his voyages, finds himself at loose ends when he arrives in Valinor after the War of Wrath. He is haunted by an encounter during one of their earlier voyages and comes to a decision...
Author notes: Prompt fill for the June challenge. This is a fusion with the poem The Sea Singer, by Alfred Percival Graves (1913; link to text at the Poetry Foundation website). For the purposes of the crossover, I decided to interpret the incident described as an event during one of Earendil's voyages to seek Valinor. (Also submitted for a SWG Challenge.)

Pairing: n/a
Text type / Format: Ficlet (drabble)
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Rating: PG
Warnings: allusion to canonical character deaths
Word Count: 100 words
Summary: Fingon, the High King, and Hurin, lord of Dor-lomin, have both suffered grievous loss, but Hurin has recently won a battle for Fingon. A bonding moment.
Author notes: Inspired by today's discovery that the canonical bynames of Fingon and Hurin are (probably) etymologically related, although they are not usually rendered in the same way. Prompt fill for the prompt "name".

Title: Numenorean Lullaby
Characters: Almarian, Aldarion (her son, known in youth as Anardil), Ailinel (her daughter)
Pairing: n/a
Text type / Format: ficlet, poetry (lullaby, acrostic)
Source / Fandom: Unfinished Tales
Rating: G
Warnings: n/a (possibly a bit of mild foreshadowing, but I think Aldarion just is like that)
Word Count: 85
Summary: Almarian, wife of the Crown Prince of Numenor, sings a lullaby to her children.
Author notes: Almarian canonically has three children, but Almiel is not born yet. Before Almarian's husband ascended the throne, he chose to live in the north of Numenor (Forostar). The first letters of the lullaby spell out the elvish word for breeze: hwesta.

Text type / Format: ficlet (acrostic)
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Rating: G
Warnings: n/a
Word Count: 80
Summary: An early encounter between Queen Indis and Nerdanel.
Author notes: These two were friends, despite the tension between Indis and Nerdanel's future husband. Perhaps they already liked each other before all that? Anyway, the first letters spell out "Malta", the elvish word for gold.

Title: Of Aeluin
Characters: (Melian referenced)
Pairing: n/a
Text type / Format: Poem (triolet)
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Rating: General
Warnings: none
Word Count: 50
Summary: A short poem about Tarn Aeluin, the hallowed lake in Dorthonion.
Author notes: Once again I have stolen material and indeed whole lines from the Lay of Leithian to compose a triolet. This is from the description of Aeluin in The Lay of Leithian Recommenced. Yes, I had gone looking for lines in which Tolkien mentions glass! Do you notice how some of this imagery appears again in the descriptions of Lake Helevorn and Mirrormere?  But in my mind, at any rate, the three lakes are still quite distinct. (Resorting to those dashes is a bit of cheating, of course, but I hope I can get away with them.)

Title: A Love Song to Middle-Earth in Spring
Characters: n/a
Pairing: singer/Arda
Text type / Format: poem (triolet, variation)
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Rating: General
Warnings: none.
Word Count: 103
Summary: A song that could have been sung by anyone after the first rising of the Sun, really--but maybe particularly by Beren himself, from whose song this piece is adapted, or by Aragorn, since he seems to have liked the Lay of Leithian, from which Beren's song is taken?
Author notes: This was already linked in the prompt post, but I thought it would be a good time to cross-post it. It was written for a LOTR community challenge on LJ that asked for a triolet on the subject of non-romantic love. The first of the two stanzas is a triolet, the second is in free variation to the first.
