A Spring in the Highlands
Characters: Original Characters; Maglor (mentioned indirectly)
Pairing: N/A
Text type / Format: Ficlet
Source / Fandom: The Silmarillion
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Word Count: 828
Summary: On a summer camping trip, Harrison and Theo listen to the river.
Author notes: Written for the Tolkien Short Fanworks challenge, July 2025. Harrison and Theo are original characters who first appeared in my Paradox 'verse, although this piece sits in the Summerland AU, a crossover between Paradox and [personal profile] spiced_wine 's Dark Prince 'verse. They are friends of Maglor, referred to here by his alias Mark Lowry. In my fics, Maglor survives through to modern times and does not go back to Valinor. Harrison's cousin Claire, also mentioned here, was the first of their group to befriend Maglor in both 'verses.

Title: The Marsh Where the Dead Sleep
Characters: None
Pairing: None
Text type / Format: Poem
Source / Fandom: The Lord of the Rings (books and films)
Rating: PG
Warnings: Canon typical creepy stuff
Word Count: 465
Summary:

“They lie in all the pools, pale faces, deep deep under the dark water. I saw them: grim faces and evil, and noble faces and sad. Many faces proud and fair, and weeds in their silver hair. But all foul, all rotting, all dead...”

- 'The Passage of the Marshes' from The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Author notes: A poem, written for the Tolkien Short Fanworks January challenge. The formal challenge was 'cumulative'; the rhythm and structure of the poem was inspired by The House That Jack Built. The thematic challenge was 'building'. I was aiming for a slow build of tension – not sure if that counts!

This poem takes a few liberties with the Dead Marshes and its inhabitants as depicted in the book. It's influenced by, but not totally aligned to, the film version. I think it's probably a children's poem from the Fourth Age or later.

Title: Notes on Small Matters
Characters: Fingon; Argon; Turgon
Pairing: Fingon/Maedhros
Text type / Format: Ficlet (not fixed length)
Source / Fandom: The Silmarillion
Rating: PG
Warnings: Allusions to canon character death
Word Count: 670
Summary: Fingon records a selection of details about his life from the Fourth Age onwards.
Author notes: The thematic and structural prompts this month both made me think of the UK shipping forecast - probably because of this piece by Himring, of which I am very fond. (I'm not a sailor, but I used to listen to the shipping forecast on occasion, if I was up at strange times for work.) Fingon's journal entries follow the same four-category structure, with brief comments against each one.

I have accidentally used the formal prompt as the thematic prompt here, but hopefully that's still OK!
