Author: Lferion
Title: Fire in Snow
Text type / Format: Other Fixed Length
Source / Fandom: Silmarillion
Prompt: Melt - Proverb - TSFW | Include Nibbles the bunny - Zhie
Rating: G
Word Count: 500
Notes: Part of the King Fingon's Menagerie series, but stands on its own.
Summary: Fingon writes to Maedhros after a long winter apart.
Yestarë
From Barad Eithel, finally
Dearest (I can write you that way now, and it will not be a diplomatic and society scandal that any of us need be aware of or care about) Russo,
As you can see from the above, Inforn Tir finally thawed, and I made my escape over the Astronomer's Pass. The scholars who wintered over at the observatory were very glad to see new faces, and delighted to exchange some of their plentiful rock-vine and ice-berry preserve for new bread and the heather beer that we brought for that exact purpose. I brought back copies of their observation reports to read. They are doing some very interesting work, which is apparently easier to do in the winter sky than the summer. I was reminded of your steward's saying, many of the times I would ride to Himring in winter: Better to make by the fire in snowlight than try to make fire in snow." Though Celegorm taught me the trick of it long ago.
We were almost snowed in there for a time, but we had decided to stay for a few days even before a late Coirë storm dropped a foot of snow. And Arien showed her bright face directly after, so the way was passable by the time we wished to push on.
Aiwendil spent some time snowbound with us (they arrived in the midst of one of the worst storms, quite unexpectedly; of course they stayed, and they are never without some small crowd of creatures). You will not be surprised to hear that I have acquired several new denizens for the Menagerie.
Two, or possibly three -- one has not entirely made up their mind if going or staying -- are young Rhosgobel Rabbits. One, the smallest, (though I doubt that state will last long; except for the other kits, head-high for every one of the sleigh team comes well above my knee, and the ears nearly to my waist; small is entirely relative) is an unusual bright white, with violet eyes, who answers to the name Nibbles. The one who has chosen to stay with Nibbles is also of a color that stands out rather, has chosen Russalapándë as their name. They were quite insistent about it. The third has not chosen a name, nor quite decided if they will continue with Aiwendil when they go. They are welcome either way -- the rabbit, though of course Aiwendil is always welcome as well.
It is very much spring here. I am sorry to have missed the ice-flowers and snowdrops in our garden, but I intend to be there as soon after New Year's Court as possible -- unless you choose to come here for it. You can meet the Porpentine, and your almost-namesake if you do. Though I warn you, Nibbles will live up to his name.
All my love. I know you are well, but I miss seeing for myself. I miss you, my ruimenna niquë, and would warm myself with you.
F
End Notes:

Date: 2022-10-12 02:42 pm (UTC)Well, the rabbit is less complicated, but Aiwendil can talk to everyone in the Menagerie, which is useful. It depends :-)
