Title: In This Together
Characters: Fingolfin, Maedhros
Pairing: Fingolfin/Maedhros
Text type / Format: fixed-length ficlet
Source / Fandom: The Silmarillion
Rating: T
Warnings: a romantic relationship between (half-)uncle and nephew, as adults
Word Count: 222
Summary: Maedhros and Fingolfin scout the hills near Himring when a sudden change of the weather makes them seek shelter.
Prompt: A sudden change of the weather. A fixed-length piece of 222 words.
The afternoon had been bright, but southwestern wind brought low-hanging clouds, and soon it was pouring with rain. Fingolfin put up his hood, but Maedhros threw back his head and welcomed the rain with heartfelt laughter. In Himring, he explained, sudden changes of weather happened all the time, but this rain, at least, did not come from the enemy. They could smell the sea, even though it was far away.
They were scouting the hills near Himring, just the two of them. It was a rare opportunity to be alone with Maedhros. Too often, he closed his mind from Fingolfin in public.
The rain made Fingolfin uneasy, however. The wind carried cries of seagulls. There was some magic in the air that called them both, even this far from the coast. He suggested taking shelter from the rain.
“There is a rock shelter close by,” Maedhros knew, and he took them there.
They crawled under the stone cliff. The floor was covered with grey reindeer lichen, dry and comfortable. Maedhros’ hair was soaking, as was Fingolfin’s cloak. The sounds of the sea echoed within the rain.
Fingolfin’s hand sought Maedhros’; the touch restored his determination. Maedhros squeezed his hand gently. His face was so close, and it did not feel wrong to kiss. They were in this together. The sea could wait.

You now have a Fingolfin tag and an author tag.

Date: 2022-04-04 10:58 am (UTC)I'm a lichenphile, but I've never heard of Reindeer lichen before so I looked it up. It does look very comfy indeed! And what an original idea for them to have a bed of this magic stuff!
The sea is being a bit rude indeed, calling to them all that way on the wind. I'm glad they ignored it and warmed each other up a bit.

Date: 2022-04-05 12:43 pm (UTC)Reindeer lichen grows where I live, and I imagine that the nature of Himring resembles that of Northern Scandinavia or perhaps Scotland, so I wanted to give them a soft bed of it.
I'd like to write more about sea-longing, it gives me a lot of thoughts about free will and such. Perhaps another time!
